Its defining trait is fragmentation into SMEs of twenty to two hundred staff, concentrated in eastern France, the Hauts-de-France and the Rhône valley. Many run at full capacity and have never needed to sell themselves: they are unfindable through directories and answer only by phone.
The selection criterion is not the quoted price but how well the machine park matches your cadence. Two workshops can differ by a factor of three on the same part simply because one is set up for series and the other for prototypes. We select on machinable dimensions, number of axes, CMM inspection means and certifications actually held — EN 9100 for aerospace, IATF 16949 for automotive, ISO 13485 for medical.
