France remains the deepest subcontracting pool in the region, particularly in machining, sheet metal, plastics and food processing. Its defining feature is fragmentation: thousands of SMEs of twenty to two hundred staff, often with no current website, no dedicated salesperson, and who only answer an RFQ if you phone them.
That is exactly what makes French sourcing both profitable and hard. The best prices and the available capacity are not on platforms: they are in workshops in eastern France, the Hauts-de-France or the Rhône valley that you have to go and find by phone.
Two administrative points regularly block foreign buyers. First the social-security compliance certificate, mandatory above a certain contract value and renewable every six months: without it you are exposed if undeclared work is found at your subcontractor. Second, the VAT regime on immovable works, which departs from the usual reverse-charge rules.
