Sourcing industrial consumables in the Netherlands

Rotterdam: direct access to the producer, not the reseller.

The Netherlands is not an ordinary chemical distribution market: it is one of Europe’s two production cores. The Rotterdam complex and the corridor toward Germany concentrate formulators, base producers and packers. On standard families — solvents, degreasers, oils, technical adhesives — it is genuinely possible to buy from the formulator rather than the reseller.

The price gap is significant at volume, but the model changes: higher minimum quantities, industrial packaging, production lead times instead of stock. That becomes relevant as soon as a requirement is recurring and predictable, and rarely before.

For a French or Luxembourg buyer importing through a Dutch port, import VAT deferment under article 23 is a badly under-used cash-flow lever: it avoids fronting VAT at customs clearance. It requires an authorisation and, usually, a fiscal representative — arranged before the first order, not after.
